Assignment 1: Three Formats of Radio

My radio station
The format of my radio station is Contemporary Hit Radio and the station itself is called Embrace. The target audience for my radio is young adults. To meet the listeners needs, Embrace will have a website that will give them the chance to enter in competitions and take part in different events. These events will be updated constantly and will also show concerts and meetings, to give the listeners a chance to get involved.

There are 5 different formats of radio. One of the formats are 'Specialist'. This format is the name given to stations that base their music on a specific genre. For example, Kerrang radio station has a specialist format as in specializes in mainstream rock. Kerrang's target audience ranges between 15-35 years old and Bauer Media show statistics that 38.1% of listeners are female and 61.9% are male.
Kerrang Radio meets its listeners needs by mixing modern and classic rock with speech programs.
"Kerrang! Radio is known for showcasing new and classic artists in live sessions and gigs at our studios in Birmingham, whilst hosting exciting events at venues across the UK."
Station Address:
Kerrang House
20 Lionel Street
Birmingham

Another format of radio is Adult Contemporary. Adult Contemporary radio stations are more 'grown up'. For example, Wave 105 has an Adult Contemporary format for its radio station. Wave 105 is known for playing "The South's Best Variety of Hits". It has a target audience ranging between 25-55 years old and I also found more statistics on Bauer Media. These statistics stated that 48.9% of listeners were female and the other 51.1% were male. This radio station broadcasts to Central South of England, including Southampton, Portsmouth, Bournemouth, Winchester and the Isle of Wight.
"It has developed an enviable reputation for a regional station, by embracing and reflecting the lifestyle of the South."

Magic 105.4 has a Gold format. Gold radio stations usually play 60-80's music. For example, Magic 105.4 plays music which can vary from Queen to Adele or Michael Buble to Marvin Gaye. This radio station has a target audience between 25-55. The statistics shown on Bauer Media show that 56% of listeners are female and the other 44% are male.
"Magic 105.4 reaches 3.1million listeners across the UK, our highest ever national reach."

Why might Kerrang be competition for my radio?
Kerrang broadcasts on FM in the West Midlands and DAB & Freeview and online, which creates a much wider audience totaling up to 1.3 million listeners. As well as these broadcasts, it is also connected with the 'Kerrang!' print magazine. This can all result in competition for my radio because Kerrang are definitely taking their listeners needs and interests into consideration by having both modern and classic music & indie and alternative rock playing at certain times of the day for all ages. They also have a different sound during the night shows, which features the traditional "Kerrang! Magazine sound".

Why might Wave 105 be competition for my radio?
Wave 105 has 3 features to their radio, these are Music, Information, and Speech. They also have competitions, events, dating, and games.
Music - The South's Best Variety of Hits
Information - Timesaver travel and essential news & information
Speech - Celebrity interviews and lifestyle features.

Magic 105.4
Magic 105.4 is already in competition with 95.8 Capital FM. During May 2011, 95.8 Capital FM was announced the most listened to commercial radio station in London. Although During the start of August 2011, it was announced that Magic 105.4 had overtaken the position. Magic provides its listeners with an online website that has everything they've previously talked about or played on the radio. They also have competitions that people can get involved with online as well as through phoning the radio.
